This is the Gurelli 5000 voice recording system

So far, I’m relatively pleased with my Mac. A few minor things are annoying me (mostly having to do with Terminal and the keyboard: lack of a “backspace” key, non-uniform support for pageup/pagedown, etc. Plus, I have a cheapie virtual desktop application which isn’t quite as good as Linux equivalents). But all in all, it’s going fairly well. I’m actually 100% Mac right now, since I don’t have a monitor for my Dell desktop (long story).

What I’m mostly pleased with is the number of things that “just work.” All the app integration, for example. Printing — although I had a routing problem for a while, and it took a while to figure out that it was a routing problem, not a Mac or Linux problem — works great. I actually do zero setup, and I hit the print button in any application and stuff starts printing on the printer attached to my linux desktop (via CUPS). How cool is that?

I just spent a week at LANL working on our next-generation MPI effort. It’s going generally well, except that I haven’t been able to do much technical work recently — it’s been all writing, writing, writing (papers and proposals). Hopefully I’ll be able to get back to tech stuff soon (famous last words).

It even snowed while we were at LANL (super high elevation). Quite beautiful there; it’s been a while since I’ve seen the 40-mile vistas and whatnot. I had to drive back to ABQ from Los Alamos on Saturday morning to catch my flight, and I saw the entire sunrise while driving. Breathtaking.

While waiting in the security line at ABQ, a guy came up to me and said, “Did you go to Notre Dame?” (I was wearning an ND sweatshirt). Turns out that he graduated in ‘99 and is working in the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) service program in Boston; he was in ABQ with some of his students for some atheltic event. I never caught his name but he’s finishing up with ACE this semester and entering grad school next fall in an Education Policy program. Good for him! The only bad part is that it’s at Michigan. Sigh. Oh well; best of luck to him regardless.

A long time ago, I was signing up in Orkut and signing up a bunch of my friends. I remember that a whole bunch of the invitation e-mails got lost; they were never delivered to my friends. I asked Orkut tech support about it, and they insisted that nothing was wrong. So about a week later, I invited everyone again, and everyone got the second set of invitations.

Well, this week, those missing invitations have turned up. I’ve been getting a few myself (I sent some test invitations to alternate e-mail addresses), and I’ve seen some bounces where I got the invitation e-mail address wrong. It only took a few months, so I guess that’s not bad. ☺

It’s going to be a busy summer. Graduation is coming, more next-gen MPI meetings, a big graduation party, possibly a vacation and other relatives visiting, and oh yeah, preparing for babies! Whew!

But it’ll be fun.
