I want you to pour every light you've got onto that field

More quickies:

  • We’ve moved to the lowest Netflix plan (1 DVD at a time, twice a month). We watch movies, but just not that quickly.
  • We went to Florida to see the grandparents for the munchkin birthday. Lesson learned: carrying child seats onto a plane is a PITA. Lesson learned: don’t try to sleep in the same room as kids who have really freaking small hypothalmuses.
  • The grandparents just got a shiny new Intel iMac. It rocks. I have iMac envy (we have an older PPC iMac).
  • When importing pictures and video from the Flordia trip, I ran out of disk space on my iMac. So I bought new 750GB disk for my linux box (the topic of a recent post) and am using my iMac’s external disk for data (it used to be used for backup). Hence, I now have lots of space on my iMac, and am using my Linux box as a backup server. The only problem is that backups take hours on a wired network (I have the iMac temporarily wired in just to run the initial backups — normally it’s wireless). Hopefully the sustainment incremental backups will take far less time (I have to disable the power savings settings of putting the machine to sleep — that’s kind of a problem…). Hmm.
  • I am finally getting my MPI development cluster [slowly] installed and setup at Cisco (I’ve been begging, borrowing, and stealing from others around my business unit [BU] until now). I’ve only got 8 nodes for now, and I’m sharing an IB switch with some other developers, but it’s a start. A bunch more nodes are on the way.
  • I got to hang out with Mark S. on my last trip to SJ. That was way cool.
  • We’re using Trac for Open MPI development these days, and it’s working out really well.
  • We just branched for Open MPI v1.2 last week (while I was on vacation). Woot!
  • Rich promises that he’s going to upgrade the MT software on WBS (the blog software on the server). Perhaps it’ll happen by the next time I visit ABQ…? (inside joke, since Rich and I are officially “retired” from WBS administration these days)
  • Our dishwasher decided to stop draining properly for unknown reasons. It was actually a fine dishwasher that has given us years of good service, and we could have gotten it fixed, but with Tracy being a Grand Muckety Muck at GE Appliances, we decided just to get a new one and upgrade instead (it wasn’t cheaper, but it was close). And WOW this new dishwasher is quiet! Tracy told me that the last one was the “quietest in the industry” at the time that we got it, and I was significantly unimpressed (still quite difficult to watch TV while it was running — you had to crank the volume up pretty high). But this new one — holy smokes — you can’t hear it from across the room. My hat’s off to the GE wet products engineers — this thing rocks!
  • After many years of hard work, Mike B. is moving to a new construction home in a great neighborhood here in Louisville. Congrats to Mike!
